Local unions are the last line of defense for America’s working families in this climate of income inequality, but for years new anti-labor groups have been working to cripple collective bargaining. Recently, workers in Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan have seen coordinated efforts to silence their voices. Now these anti-worker tactics are coming to Pennsylvania.
Legislators in Harrisburg have partnered with anti-labor groups to introduced two bills – House Bill 1507 and Senate Bill 1034 – aimed at making it harder for public servants like teachers, school bus drivers, nurses, social workers and others to have a voice in their workplaces and in Harrisburg. These bills pretend to be about dues, but they are really a politically-motivated attempt to keep power in the hands of corporations and out of the middle class.
These “paycheck deception” bills only apply to unions, but not other companies and groups, and they have been found unconstitutional in other states like Alabama, Arizona and Washington. The goal of these bills is to weaken unions and erode worker protections and it would continue to widen the chasm between the super wealthy and the rest of working America.
These bills don’t protect workers, they protect corporations from having to contend with a united front, working to defend the rights and benefits of its employees. It’s an attack on the middle class and working families and their ability to have a strong voice both in the workplace and in Harrisburg.
