Sara Innamorato’s Campaign Elevated the Voices Of All Working Families and Communities in Allegheny County and Offered a Bold Vision to Invest in Affordable Housing, Reform the County Jail, Hold Wealthy Corporations and Special-Interests, Like UPMC, Accountable, and Create Good New Jobs in Renewable Energy and Address Climate Change
(Pittsburgh, PA) – SEIU Healthcare PA workers celebrated the election victory of Sara Innamorato as the incoming Allegheny County Executive. Innamorato launched her grassroots-focused campaign alongside nurses, healthcare workers, union members, and working families on December 15, 2022. She handily won the democratic primary on May 16th, 2023.
Matt Yarnell, the President of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania said, “The election of Sara Innamorato for Allegheny County Executive is an historic victory for working people. The right to organize and build worker power among the region’s largest employers was on the ballot this year and voters made it clear that it is a top priority in Allegheny County.”
Innomorato’s historic victory gives working families and essential healthcare workers the platform to hold corporate power accountable and deliver real results to more than 1.2 million Western Pennsylvania residents and over 130 municipalities in the region.
SEIU Healthcare PA’s track record of building a powerful grassroots political movement is without question. Healthcare workers, progressive advocates, and working families not only helped carry Innamorato to victory, but also helped to elect Ed Gainey as the first Black Mayor of PIttsburgh. SEIU HCPA was also instrumental in electing Summer Lee in 2022, the first Black Woman to represent Western PA in Congress. Voters are proving time and again that they want candidates, up and down the ballot, to challenge the power, influence, and money of huge corporations and special interests, like UPMC.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Sara and the inspiring campaign that she ran that excited voters and united our communities. Healthcare workers are eager to support Sara’s bold vision for the working people of Allegheny County,” said Matt Yarnell.
