We knocked. We called. We texted. WE WON. We know that fighting for justice doesn’t stop in the workplace. Standing up for the health and well-being of our communities is a vital part of our work. This includes electing public officials who align with our values and will support us on issues that matter most to healthcare workers.
Organizer, community activist, and single mom, Kendra Brooks ran a historic campaign as a Working Families Party candidate, bringing with her a history of being on the frontlines of the struggle for education justice, affordable housing and ending mass incarceration. Her commitment to fighting for dignity and respect for all working people, increasing affordable housing, ensuring fair funding for our public schools and ending police targeting of black and brown communities is why our members were proud to work so hard to get Kendra elected.Â
Helen Gym was a champion for working people in the city far before winning her Philadelphia City Council seat in 2015. Her fierce advocacy for Philadelphia’s public school students, funding for pre-K programs, housing justice, fair scheduling for workers, and expanding the city’s living wage laws made it easy for our members to fight to keep her in office.
Executive Director of Philadelphia Freedom School, Isaiah Thomas is passionate about creating a Philadelphia full of opportunities for our youth. His plans to enact policies that help the city attract and retain businesses and local jobs is why we are thrilled to see Isaiah seated on Philadelphia City Council.Â
Our members endorsed Bobby Wilson because of his commitment to workers’ rights. He stands with UPMC workers and has joined in the fight to hold the healthcare giant accountable to the Pittsburgh community. Bobby also supports equitable development, clean air and water, and making Pittsburgh a great place to live for all working families. Congratulations, Bobby, and we look forward to working with you as you take your seat on Pittsburgh City Council!
Dan McCaffery is a card-carrying union member. A veteran born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia, Dan is ready to bring his working class values to Pennsylvania’s Superior Court, and we are proud to have supported him!
We are proud to have endorsed Lisa Middleman for Allegheny District Attorney. Unseating a 22 year incumbent with the backing of both major political parties was an uphill battle. But we are inspired by the progress workers made in getting out the message about the need for real reform in Allegheny county, and the movement that was started by this race sent a clear message that working people are ready for change.Â
Our deepest respect to all the candidates running inspirational campaigns focused on the needs of working families. We are proud to stand by those who will fight alongside us on our issues, and we will continue to hold all elected officials accountable to defending strong unions, safe staffing and fair funding that are vital to our communities.
