More than 200 Chambersburg healthcare workers turned out for bargaining on Tuesday to deliver a clear message to management: This is NOT the time for us to make concessions! It was a sight to see. Sadly, our show of solidarity and resolve did not move management.
Despite our progress at bargaining and our preliminary acceptance of their healthcare proposal, management decided to pull both their healthcare and PTO proposals when we couldn’t come to an agreement on PTO. We were willing to commit to meaningful changes to our existing system, but our committee could not agree to lowering time off accruals.
It’s worth noting that WellSpan Chambersburg is on track to make nearly $28 million in profit this year — there was no need to set back progress on healthcare over a PTO change that both sides agreed cost less than a 1% wage increase.
Despite this setback, we’re standing strong and sticking to our promise to settle a fair contract that includes wage increases that recognize our hard work and sacrifice and holds the line on healthcare costs.
We still have time to come to an agreement that meets our needs but regardless of where we are at the end of our last negotiating session on Thursday, we’ll be voting on our next steps this Tuesday, July 5th. Make a plan to be there and decide how we move forward as a union!
