Homecare Organizer with SEIU Healthcare PA and the United Homecare Workers of PA
Role:
The Homecare Organizer is a key leadership role in SEIU Healthcare PA to help build the homecare workers union across PA. The responsibility of the Homecare
Organizer includes leadership identification, recruiting, organizing, and mobilizing workers to participate in the movement to improve the lives of working people, our patients/consumers, and our communities and to build a more just and humane society.
Locations:
Western PA (Pittsburgh or Erie) and Central PA (Harrisburg area)
Duties and Responsibilities:
A Homecare Organizer performs a wide range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the campaign and strategy. Examples of those duties and responsibilities,
not intended to be exhaustive nor all inclusive, are listed below:
Organizing Workers/Building Capacity/Identifying and Developing Leaders
1. Lead workers into struggle so that they learn from their experience that their power comes from collective action.
2. Identify, recruit, and develop member leaders to lead coworkers and help lead the union’s programs and campaigns including: political advocacy, participation in skill based training program, an advocacy around care delivery systems
3. Support and or lead contract negotiations, working closely and effectively with elected negotiating committees composed of member leaders.
4. Support activities, struggles, and campaigns of other workers, the union as a whole, and allies in the wider movement for social and economic justice.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
A Homecare Organizer must be able to effectively organize their time and develop and carry out her/his plan independently and with minimum supervision. They must also receive direction from and interact with their immediate supervisor or lead organizer on a regular and consistent basis and work with members, and other union staff.
Criteria for Evaluation/Key Qualifications: A successful Homecare Organizer will be able to:
- Listen to workers’ issues, effectively lay out the vision of the union, move workers to overcome their reservations and obstacles, and inspire and motivate
them to get involved in union campaigns and activities. - Demonstrate a curiosity in members lives and struggles.
- Identify and develop leaders to take on union leadership roles and help lead union activities and programs.
- Take initiative and be creative in developing new roles for members within the union and provide the support needed to be successful.
- Establish and cultivate productive and respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, including members and other staff.
- Optimize use of resources of the union including the Member Resource Center, program staff, and SEIU resources.
- Display sound organizational skills to plan and manage and prioritize work and balance conflicting demands subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing
environment. - Work independently and carry out assigned responsibilities in a competent and professional manner in keeping with the union’s overall goals and expectations
- Understand and utilize basic technology (including word processing and database software, internet, etc.)
Compensation:
Competitive salary range of $58,000-$78,000 depending on experience and benefits package including fully-paid health insurance, defined-benefit pension,
optional 401(k), etc.
Work Expectations:
Homecare Organizers are expected to work long and irregular hours and may need to work on weekends when necessary. Homecare organizers will have regional travel and may need to travel to other locations in PA depending on the campaign’s needs. SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania provides mileage reimbursement at the federal rate and lodging when working away from home. Homecare Organizers need a driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle (mileage is reimbursed at the IRS rate).
