Position: Communication Specialist, United Homecare Workers of Pennsylvania (UHWP)
Role: The Communications Specialist develops messaging and communications tools and
coordinates paid, earned, and social media and owned media in support of healthcare
worker organizer for SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania. This role will include working
especially closely with the United Homecare Workers of Pennsylvania (UHWP), on
organizing and issue-advocacy campaigns to help win good jobs for homecare workers,
advance quality care, and a better system of care and services. This includes
communication work in state (and sometimes federal) political campaigns and legislation
and policy initiatives and campaigns.
Location: Based in Pennsylvania
Responsibilities: Create and implement short- and long-term communication strategies and plans for
the following areas:
- Campaigns to elevate the jobs and care of current UHWP members
- Engagement and movement building work with UHWP members and non-
union homecare workers - Advancing a public narrative around homecare services in PA
- Ability to connect a campaign plan to develop and drive a communications plan that
would include: paid, earned, social and owned communications to advance
communications strategies in the areas above including developing internal
messaging and external messaging, engaging with press, coordinating social
media and various print and digital communications - Strong ability to support and prepare workers to be effective spokespersons.
- Perform other duties as required to support the work of the union.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in communications and/or labor
organizing.
- A demonstrated passion for social and economic justice, preferably 1-2 years of
union or other organizing experience. - Commitment to growing the union and labor movement and building a more just
healthcare system. - Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Strong project management skills, including ability to juggle multiple projects,
organize and prioritize, and respond quickly to changes. - Sharp attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Comfortable with long irregular hours and travel depending on campaign needs.
- Preference for candidates who have experience with graphic design, with video,
editing, and/or press experience. - Experience with communications in labor organizing or political arena is a plus.
Job Requirements:
- Work is generally performed in a home or office setting with periodic attendance at
union actions and events required. - Will require flexible and extended hours based on campaign needs.
- Travel, generally, in-state may be needed at times based on campaign needs.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle as needed for travel. Travel is
reimbursed under IRS mileage reimbursement rate. - Applicants need to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination as per applicable laws.
Compensation:
Competitive salary package of $58,000-$89,000 or more based on an experienced based
pay scale; includes excellent benefits including defined benefit pension, optional 401K type
plan, paid time off, and fully paid health insurance benefits.
