Summary:
SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania is looking for communications professionals on a project basis to support our work on with hospital, nursing home, and home care workers.
Description of SEIU Healthcare PA:
SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania unites 25,000 health care workers from all areas of the health care industry. We are the nurses, caregivers, dietary workers, lab technicians and housekeepers who work in Pennsylvania’s nursing homes, hospitals, home health care agencies, state health facilities and auxiliary health care services.
Together we work to protect patient care, expand access to quality health care for all, and to improve our working conditions. We accomplish these goals by organizing non-union healthcare workers, driving industry standards in our contracts, and fighting for legislation that affects health care in our state.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Communications Specialists perform a wide range of duties, collaborating with healthcare workers, union officers, campaign leaders, organizers and other staff to develop and implement effective strategies to support workers and win campaigns. In a typical campaign, a Communications Specialist:
- Implements strategy and outreach to generate positive media coverage of the union’s members, goals and campaigns.
- Initiates and develops working relationships with media journalists.
- Coordinates with colleagues to frame and craft campaign messages that will resonate with audiences.
- Coordinates with the campaign leaders to develop stories to pitch to media outlets.
- Conducts spokesperson training for SEIU members, worker activists, leaders and allies in relation to interviews with media.
- Manages campaign event communications – strategy, message, look and feel, materials, marketing, media outreach, event flow and agenda.
- Oversees work of communicators within locals to ensure high quality standards, best practices, and consistency of message in relation to outreach to media.
- Manages targeting and placement of paid advertisements in media to support various campaigns and political action.
- Provides background briefings for union leaders, field staff, members, and worker activists.
- Drafts and designs union leaflets, newsletters, background papers, and other material.
- Performs other duties as required to support the work of the union.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. Two to three years’ experience in media, communications, or online organizing. Excellent oral and written communications skills plus design and layout proficiency, including proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite. Some field organizing experience preferred. Labor movement experience is a plus. A demonstrated passion for social and economic justice is a must.
Physical Requirements:Â
Work is generally performed in an office setting with periodic attendance at union rallies and events required. Long and extended hours and travel in state may be required.
